FORTEAN: A Roleplaying Game of Anomalous Phenomena
Red rain coats a reading room’s steps. A voice repeats from an unpowered device. A glass sphere casts moving shadows under bright light. Someone needs an answer, and your team has been asked to investigate.
FORTEAN is a standalone tabletop roleplaying game of contemporary investigation, built on the SRD 5.2.1 framework. Characters advance through six levels as they complete cases. The book contains the character rules, equipment, field procedures and investigations needed to play; there’s no second rulebook to buy.
Choose an Academic, Investigator, Journalist, Naturalist, Engineer or Sensitive. Follow witness accounts, examine records, compare samples and test competing claims. Each class brings its own methods to the inquiry, while backgrounds and feats help define the people doing the work.
Essential clues are available through credible actions, with multiple routes to the facts that keep a case moving. Failed checks can cost time, attract attention or complicate fieldwork. A bad roll doesn’t erase the only lead, and an early correct theory can bring the group closer to a decision.
Finding a cause can leave difficult choices. A witness wants anonymity, a collector wants possession, or a damaged site needs to close before someone gets hurt. Cases can end through preservation, public safety, custody or disclosure, even when a larger question remains open.
Inside the book
Six investigator classes, 36 class features, 12 backgrounds and ten feats.
Nine complete cases, including three introductory investigations and six additional case files.
Ten field modules covering anomalous rain, aerial sightings, unusual animals, disappearances, disputed time and distance, apparitions and artifacts.
Procedures for research, interviews, sample collection, equipment calibration, competing hypotheses, Exposure and case closure.
Combat and hazards, threat profiles, modern equipment, campaign guidance and worked examples.
Character and investigation records, a quick rules reference, glossary and topical guide.
Start with The Rain Ledger, compare the samples and follow the records. The case gives the GM a prepared truth, accessible leads, hazards and closing choices. Bring the dice, gather the group and decide what the findings justify
