A random conversation about 5e Backgrounds somehow led Piper to compare them to the old James Bond RPG’s Fields of Experience. They’re not your character class, but they explain who you were before you became an adventurer and what you might do in your downtime. We looked at each other and realized that we need to write a spy game. Both of us are more invested in the thriller genre than fantasy. I don’t know if there’s been another D20-based espionage RPG since Spycraft, but it doesn’t really matter. There are a million 3e- and 5e-based fantasy role playing games even though D&D dominates. There are always niches to be filled and different takes on a genre to be explored.
